Why This Matters
This is an opportunity to spotlight your district’s creativity, student engagement, and commitment to celebrating Texas-grown foods.

Across Texas, school nutrition teams brought the day to life by highlighting locally grown produce, engaging students through taste tests and educational activities, decorating cafeterias, and strengthening the connection between Texas agriculture and the meals served daily.

From Commissioner Sid Miller
"Texas Fruit and Vegetable Day reminds students about the variety of produce grown in Texas and encourages them to appreciate the flavor and nutrition it offers,” said Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller. “When students eat more fresh produce from Texas farms, they feel better physically and mentally. I thank the Texas Legislature for setting aside this day to promote healthy lifestyles for Texas children and celebrate the abundance of good food grown in the Lone Star State.”

If your district participated in Texas Fruit & Vegetable Day, be sure to submit your entry by April 30 for a chance to be recognized statewide. Eligible entries may include photos or videos of decorations and activities, menu highlights, and examples of student engagement. Last year’s Texas Fruit & Vegetable Day winner, Brenham ISD, recently experienced this connection firsthand through a behind-the-scenes tour of the Wonderful Citrus operation in Mission, Texas. Two school nutrition professionals explored the full journey of fresh citrus, from nursery to processing.

Reflecting on the experience on LinkedIn, Director of Child Nutrition at Brenham ISD Kasandra Davis, MS, RD, LD, shared that the tour offered an up-close look at one of the nation’s leading citrus producers and the full process behind getting fresh citrus from grove to table. She noted that Brenham ISD participants visited the citrus nursery, packing plant, and juice processing facility, where they saw firsthand how citrus is grown, harvested, sorted, packaged, and transformed into products enjoyed across the country. She described the visit as an invaluable experience that deepened the connection between agriculture and the meals served to students every day, and expressed appreciation to the Texas Department of Agriculture, the Texas Association for School Nutrition, and Peterson Farms, Inc. for hosting the contest and supporting fresh, local foods in schools.

This year’s winner will receive a similar one-of-a-kind experience with The Common Market, giving two child nutrition staff members an all-expenses-paid opportunity to gain an inside look at regional food systems and deepen their connection to local agriculture. The experience will include tours, opportunities to connect with growers and industry experts, as well as travel, meals, and accommodations. In addition, the winning district will be recognized by the Texas Department of Agriculture and the Texas Association for School Nutrition, with its efforts highlighted across statewide communications and platforms. The second-place winner will receive one complimentary registration to the 2026 TASN Annual Conference in Grapevine, Texas.
